Sevilla vs Bayern

Sevilla vs Bayern The UEFA Super Cup is contested between the winner of the Champions League and the Europa League. It’s been a long time since Bayern Munich contested this fixture. The last time the Bavarians were here, it was Pep Guardiola’s debut game against Chelsea. That feels like a different era now, but a number of players who played that game are still with us today.

Unlike 2013, this Super Cup isn’t meant to be the start of a new era at Bayern. Hansi Flick, the man who won the treble last season, has the chance to do something Jupl never had — to follow up on his success. This Super Cup is meant to be a continuation of last season’s dominance. Can the team pull it off?
Team news

Aside from Tanguay Nianzou (thigh) and Kingsley Coman (quarantine), Bayern Munich have a full squad heading to Lisbon. David Alaba has recovered from the muscular problem that kept him out against Schalke, while Flick confirmed that Robert Lewandowski is fit and ready to play. Even Javi Martinez, who was supposed to finalize his move away from the club, has traveled with the team and is an option for the XI.

Super Cup: Bayern Munich vs Sevilla preview

However, knowing Hansi Flick, don’t expect too many surprises. The attack is probably the easiest part to guess given that there aren’t many options. Robert Lewandowski will start his first ever Super Cup, with Thomas Muller in a supporting role behind him. Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane are the only real candidates to start on the wings, but neither are likely to play the full 90. Hansi Flick still has a Bundesliga game on Sunday to worry about. Still, a good 60 minutes should be enough to beat Sevilla. Or maybe Jamal Musiala can come on and replicate his excellent goal against Schalke.

Bayern’s midfield is also set in stone. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are the coach’s preferred pairing, so expect to see them start in the middle. It’s still early in the season, so Flick will probably stick with this pairing a little longer. When rotation becomes necessarily, we might start to see Corentin Tolisso accumulate some minutes. Sevilla vs Bayern,

Now, the defense. This one is a lot harder to guess, simply because we’re not sure about the player’s fitness. David Alaba was a surefire starter at center back last season, but between his recent muscle issues and the contract extension drama, Hansi Flick might opt for Jerome Boateng instead. Niklas Sule is expected to start at the right center back position, while Benjamin Pavard is the only right back Bayern has (for now). The left back question is also up in the air. Will Lucas Hernandez start, or Alphonso Davies? It’s honestly a 50-50 decision. Sevilla vs Bayern.

Barely a month since Kingsley Coman’s goal gave Bayern a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Estadio da Luz in Portugal, Hansi Flick’s side will look to add to their Bundesliga and Champions League title by picking up the UEFA Super Cup for only the second time, having previously lifted the trophy back in 2013; kick-off on Thursday night is at 8pm.

Sevilla, despite their recent record in the Europa League, have also only won one Super Cup – back in 2006 – and were runners up in three consecutive years between 2014 and 2016.

Liverpool vs Lincoln City

Lincoln City vs. Liverpool: Preview, Team News, and Ways to Watch. For the first — but definitely not the last — time in this weird season, Liverpool will take the pitch on less than a week’s rest. Thankfully, it’s a soft start, with the Carabao Cup a competition Jürgen Klopp has been more than willing to play the kids, and the opposition third tier Lincoln City.

The Imps, lead by the uncomfortably yoked for a manager Michael Appleton have started the season at a gallop, winning all four of their matches, with a combined 11-2 goal differential. Two straight wins in the league sees them in second place behind Ipswich Town and their ambitions of promotion to the Championship have kicked off in the best possible manner.

A few injuries have struck the club in the opening stanza of the campaign, however, and will have to make matchday decisions on a few starters. A proper primer on Lincoln City can be found here. Liverpool vs Lincoln City,
Projected Liverpool Lineup (4-3-3)

Adrián; Williams, Phillips, Koumetio, Tsimikas; Thiago, Jones, Milner; Jota, Minamino, Elliott

It’s anyone’s guess what Jürgen Klopp will do here, as — despite press conference stand-in Pep Lijnders assurances of a “strong team” — the Carabao Cup has never been a priority under the German’s tenure. There is also the fact that the Reds now have genuine depth in their squad, and even making 11 changes will be able to field a Premier League level XI.

At the back, Joe Gomez and Joël Matip will miss out again, with the former likely to return in time for Arsenal at the weekend. Billy Koumetio will be subject of a fitness test tomorrow, and may start, in all likelihood next to one of Nat Phillips or Virgil van Dijk. Kostas Tsimikas is likely to spell Andy Robertson, while Neco Williams will make his second start of the season at right-back.

Despite immediately bossing things against ten-man Chelsea on Sunday, Thiago is in need of further match fitness and could be in line for a start, while Curtis Jones is a logical inclusion following his performances in cup competitions last season and subsequent development. Jordan Henderson misses out after suffering an injury at Stamford Bridge, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains unavailable. The veteran savvy of James Milner could provide a useful nexus point in midfield.

Liverpool vs Lincoln City Preview

Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino were brought to the club as depth for the front three and should be allowed to play that role here, possibly alongside Harvey Elliott, who impressed massively in pre-season. Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah will no doubt be in the squad however, to right the ship should things go askance.
What the Managers Said

“We’ve got a couple of issues,” he said ahead of Liverpool’s visit. “But I don’t want to give too much away to Jürgen!

“We’ve got a couple of issues that might be a bit of a problem come Thursday. It’s going to be touch and go with definitely one of them, but maybe a couple of them.”

On the prospect of the Reds shuffling their options to face The Imps, Appleton said: “Most weekends, we probably know at least eight, maybe nine, players the opposition are going to start with. It could be anything on Thursday.

“Is last year’s FA Cup run they had a bit of an indication of the team they may play? I don’t know. But having said that, the one thing that doesn’t change – or doesn’t tend to change – is their style and how they set up.

“So, we can prepare for that and hopefully we do the right preparation.”

Bristol City v Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup – The third-round tie is not on TV while it’s expected Dean Smith could make as many as 10 changes to the side that beat Sheffield United 1-0

Aston Villa would have had a 70-hour turnaround from the final whistle against Sheffield United to the first one at Ashton Gate on Thursday. Villa are in Carabao Cup third-round action against the Robins just four weeks after two 60-minute games against them in a pre-season friendly.

The two-game encounter finished 1-1 while, on Thursday, Dean Smith will be looking for progression to play either Stoke or Gillingham in the next round.

The League Cup is a competition Smith’s spoken at length about before and reiterated it’s a competition Villa can win after going so close last year.

Villa, meanwhile, fresh from a winning Premier League start, will ring the changes against Bristol City knowing they face Fulham just four days later on Monday, September 28. Aston Villa vs Bristol City.

Here, BirminghamLive looks at the potential starting XI Smith will most-likely go with, including a debut for £17 million summer buy Bertrand Traore.Aston Villa vs Bristol City,

Emiliano Martinez had a debut to remember after saving a spot-kick and keeping a welcome clean sheet. The Argentinian was signed for a reason following the £20 million transfer and that’s to become Villa’s new No.1 in the Premier League in the absence of Tom Heaton.

As for Thursday night, Jed Steer is likely to get some much-needed game time in place of Orjan Nyland. It was the latter who played 90 minutes at Burton in the previous round but Steer is expected to be the cup goalkeeper from hereon in. Nyland’s future remains up in the air, too, as his current Villa contract expires in June 2021. Lovre Kalinic and Nyland are expected to head out prior to the October 5 deadline, leaving Villa with a three-man goalkeeping department of Martinez, Heaton and Steer. Under-23 stopper Viljami Sinisalo will be fourth-choice should injuries occur.

Defence

Now here’s a potential problematic position for Villa at Bristol knowing Ezri Konsa had a slight issue with his left hamstring. The centre-back, Monday’s goal hero, was in inspired form against Sheffield United and won’t be risked on Thursday evening. Smith, though, will hope Bjorn Engels shakes off a thigh strain in time otherwise Tyrone Mings will have to step in which would see him play three games within a week. Kortney Hause is a banker to start at Bristol with the ex-Wolves man being a cup competitor for the season ahead. Should Engels miss out again, young centre-back Dominic Reven, 20, might just get the call-up to the bench.

At full-back, Neil Taylor will get match action in the Carabao Cup once more while, over on the right, Ahmed Elmohamady is ahead of Frederic Guilbert in terms of Villa’s pecking order. Matty Cash will be Villa’s Premier League right-back and he’ll take a deserved night off on Thursday after an impressive big-league debut.

Midfield

Against Burton, Smith started Marvelous Nakamba as Villa’s midfield anchorman with the impressive Jacob Ramsey and Henri Lansbury in front of him and you can’t see that changing for Bristol. Conor Hourihane played only an hour on Monday and should be an option from off the bench. As for Ramsey, he’ll look to build on that assured display at the Pirelli Stadium – only this time against far better opposition. John McGinn and Douglas Luiz, you feel, will both be rested for Fulham.

Attack

Club-record signing Ollie Watkins started last week and scored on his competitive Villa debut in the 3-1 win over the Brewers. The £33 million man is, though, fresh from a demanding 90-minute workout against Sheffield United and looks set for a place on the bench with Keinan Davis likely to earn a recall to the starting XI. Davis is eying back to back goals in the cup after a rare strike at Burton.

The biggest mystery ahead of Thursday will evolve around Mbwana Samatta. The Tanzanian was unused against Burton Albion and watched from the Trinity Road Stand against Sheffield United, with Smith saying of his omission: “It’s just selection. Players who I believe have done well (in training) get in the team.” Smith, meanwhile, could use the cup tie at Burton to put Samatta in the shop window as a good performance and a goal could bump up his price.
